Commercial and Industrial Energy Storage solutions are already a real and viable option to respond to power supply systems with grid capacity constraints and with an energy demand that needs management as well as power management. This category of batteries ranges from 100 kWh to 3 MWh, with discharge and charge capacities from 0.25C to 1C, i.e. with typical charge and discharge powers from 100 kW to 3 MW.

The advantages of commercial and industrial energy storage are numerous:
- Increased self-consumption: Allows efficient management of surpluses in photovoltaic installations, improving profitability.
- Grid stability: Energy storage systems help to eliminate instabilities at the point of connection or supply.
- Peak Shaving: Reduces moments of "over-power" in consumption, avoiding additional costs due to excess power with respect to the contracted power.
- Reduced supply conditions: Storage can provide capacity and become an alternative to costly utility requirements.
- Impossibility in supply conditions: In cases where a power increase is impossible or not allowed, the energy storage system helps to solve this need.
Energy storage system composition
A commercial and industrial energy storage system is not only composed of a "big battery"; it includes several components:
- ESS (Energy Storage System): The battery itself, the set of lithium cells that make up the storage capacity (kWh).
- PCS (Power Conversion System): Bidirectional inverter for charging and discharging the battery, whose main parameter is the power (kW) it is capable of managing.
- Sensors: They provide monitored information to know the status of the equipment or a specific part of it.
- Climate Control/Ventilation: Maintain the optimum temperature for the correct operation of the solution.
- Fire protection:Manufacturers typically offer between 3 and 5 levels of protection to prevent fire hazards.
- Overpressure protection: Energy storage systems that act as "relief valves" to eliminate the risk of explosion.
- Cabinet: Furniture or cabinet where some manufacturers configure the solution with all the above elements.
- Monitoring systems: Set of dataloggers present in the system for the acquisition of data necessary for the correct management of energy in the EMS.
- EMS (Energy Management System): Supervisor and global system manager, capable of managing and monitoring the main subsystems of a complete installation.
- Switch-backup: Element for solutions that require network disconnection at times of application of the backup functionality.
